Knit-a-thon for National Day of Volunteering

We are getting very excited about this Friday, 30th September. Normally we host our regular knitting and stitching group on Friday mornings but this Friday is extra special.

Friday the 30th September is National Day of Volunteering in Ireland and to show our support we are hosting a knit-a-thon.

Volunteer Ireland say "The aim of the National Day of Volunteering is to encourage everyone in Ireland to give volunteering a try, so that everyone can learn that - even if it’s only for a minute, an hour, or a day - volunteering can make a big difference and be a lot of fun! Read more under our ’Get Informed’, ’Get Involved,’ and ’Get Organised’ buttoms to learn more about the National Day of Volunteering and how you can get involved! ".

We thought that taking part in this event would show our support for the wonderful volunteers in Ireland, promote a local charity (Bee for Battens) and bring all the lovely knitters and crocheters in Kerry together.

You can read lots more about the knit-a-thon here but basically these events are going to be held all over Ireland on Friday and we are going to collectively try and break the Guinness World Record of the most people knitting simultaneously which currently stands at 1147. Easy right?

You can knit whatever you like on the day but we are also asking people to donate a piece knitted or in crochet (Any size or item) to donate for sale to raise funds for the local charity Bee for Battens. The donated garments will be put for sale in the shop between now and Christmas and all proceeds donated to the charity,

So all you have to do is turn up with your yarn and needles on Friday September 30th between 10am and 1pm at the shop and get knitting and crocheting, have a cuppa and meet other stitchers.

We look forward to seeing you then.

Macroom Purlies Visit Us In Killarney

We had a fabulous morning when Patricia and the rest of the Macroom Purlies visited The Crafty Knit and Stitchers here in the shop in Killarney. Everyone was working on very versatile projects from delicate Irish Lace Flowers to contribution squares for the urban project in Limerick which will see a building covered in yarn. Mairead brought her beautiful wheel and it was great to see such a wonderful group of talented ladies getting to know eachother.

Now it is our turn to plan our trip to Macroom!

Macroom Purlies Visit

Hi all,

Just to let you know on Friday the 12th March the Macroom Purlies will be coming to our Crafty Knit and Stitchers group on Friday morning from 10am to 12pm. Their will be seven ladies making their way down which should be a really fun get together with lots of knitting and crochet (and lots of chat and laughs as usual).

I know most of regulars are already looking forward to this but spread the word as everyone is welcome! Will have to get the cream cakes in!

Isabeau Purse

Finally got this purse finished at The Crafty Knit and Stitchers Tuesday meeting last night. This was from a free pattern on http://www.ravelry.com/ and from the designer Sylvie Damey.

Anybody who knows me well - knows I love tiny little handbags and have been known to venture out  for a rare night on the town with my phone, keys, card, cash and lippy in a bag measuring not more than 3"x3". Any more space is just a waste....and hard to find things in after a couple of glasses of vino!
Although the original pattern is knit in a cotton / acrylic mix I could not resist knitting it up in my favourite Artesano Aran. It is so soft to touch and feels quite robust with the lace and moss sections. This was a lovely project to do as it was my first time knitting a lace pattern (front and back panels). The sides and bottoms were knit in a moss stitch and the edgings, a mixture of lace and stockinette. This was also knit using less than a skein! The other challenge which I liked about this pattern was that the joining up was done by single crochet. This gave a nice decorative effect and I'm sure using a contrasting colour would really make it stand out.
I originally lined the bag in a pretty sky blue floral cotton but was not happy with it so I removed the lining and I will reline it when I find a good complimentary fabric.
I think I will experiment with this pattern again in different yarns.
So on to the next project.........

P.S. Got the button from the lovely Suzie who recently sent me some lovely bits and pieces as part of our mini book swap. Thanks Suzie - was looking for just the right btto :-)

The Crafty Knit and Stitchers

Our first get together of The Crafty Knit and Stitchers was a great success I am delighted to report. A fab bunch of ladies turned up with their needles, yarns, advice and laughs. We had a really great mix from total beginners to total experts and there was great support offered for newbies and people stuck on projects.

Just a reminder that we meet every Friday morning from 10am to 12pm in the shop. Also this Saturday we are hosting a World Wide Spin in Public Day and there will be spinning demonstrations in the shop from 2pm to 5pm.

Hope to see you there!

The Crafty Knit and Stitchers

This year after getting numerous requests we started selling yarn and all the bits and bobs to go with it. As a result we have met some fabulous people and we have decided to set up a weekly knit an stitch group in the shop every Friday from 10am to 12pm. There is no cost involved just bring your yarn and needles and meet some other fabulous knit and stitchers.
